Library Programs
Accelerated
Reader
AR is a computer based comprehension program that evaluates student's
ability to understand books they have read. Students choose books and ten
take a quiz about events from the book on computers. Students are encouraged
to participate in the program with incentives, recognition, point challenges,
and point goals.
Book Character Day
Students and all members of our faculty and staff come to school dressed
as their favorite character from their favorite book. Teachers take advantage
of this day to have students make oral presentations about what they have
read. Members of the community are invited to come and visit in the classrooms
sharing their favorite children's book with the students. Each classroom
has at least one special visitor.
Visiting Author
Each year a published children's author or illustrator is scheduled
to visit our students. They share with our students how they became authors
and illustrators. students are amazed o learn that these published, famous
people were once kids just like them, and most grew up in small towns similar
to ours. The idea they push with our students is "If I can grow up to become
famous, you can grow up to be anything you want to be!"
This year s visiting author was Michael
Sampson. He read some of his books to the students, talked about some
of his upcoming work, and inspired some students to be future authors.
Visitors in the past have included Jim Aylesworth and James Rice.

Louisiana
Young Readers Choice Award
The Louisiana Young Readers' Choice Award has been established to encourage
children of Louisiana in grades 3-5 to read and to vote for their favorite
book from a list of titles suggested by librarians, educators and other
interested individuals in Louisiana. The book receiving the most votes
from children in grades three through five will be the winner. The purpose
of the award is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana,
and to give them the opportunity to participate in the selection of books
worthy of receiving an award for literary excellence. The award seeks to
excite children about reading by encouraging them to read and compare high
quality books, and to honor the authors of outstanding books for children.
Students at Central have been able to use voting machines to vote for this
award the last two years. This is a very educational and fun learning event.

WINNER: MY DOG, MY HERO by BETSY BYARS
Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed
to encourage students to read quality literature. Teams of students work
together to read 10 books with varying levels of difficulty. The teams
work together to decide who is responsible for becoming "experts" on each
of the books. After a few weeks the teams compete against each other to
answer questions about the events in the books. The team that lasts through
all the rounds is Battle of the Books Champion. This is a fun opportunity
for all students to read and test their knowledge. Check back for further
information concerning dates and the books to be read.
